About the STEAM Pathways Program

Who's it for?

The Coliban Water Steam Pathways Program has been custom designed for students who identify as female.

It's one-week of work experience that's full of real-life experiences. There are also some very special opportunities to connect with interesting people, doing interesting things in an industry that's critical to our community.

We're sure that at the end of the week, you'll be able to imagine a STEAM career in the water industry, and better understand how you could shape your future studies to support an exciting career.

When does it run?

Applications are now open for the 2025 Coliban Water Steam Pathways Program.

The program will run in 2025.

How to apply

Applications must be completed online as advised by your Work Experience Coordinator. Please ensure all information in the application is completed correctly.

Questions should be directed to your Work Experience Coordinator.

Successful applicants will be notified by their school's Work Experience Coordinator.

If you are successful, you'll receive an email and further details from Coliban Water.

A snapshot of your week

Over the course of the week, you'll work with other program participants to solve a 'mock' drinking water quality incident at the Echuca Water Reclamation Plant - that's where Coliban Water treats the water from the Murray River to the standard required to supply drinking water to Echuca residents.

Teamwork will be key to ensure the right response and the best outcome for customers, the community, and the local environment - just as it is every day at Coliban Water.

    The project

    Learn about Coliban Water at your first site tour, complete your safety induction and project briefing.

    Meet the boss, your team, your 'buddy', and get to know your role.

  • Tuesday

    The industry

    Your project work begins.

    You'll get up close and personal with the experts.

  • Wednesday

    Drinking water

    You'll be back on-site today learning, problem solving, and solution finding.

    Together with your teammates, you'll start brainstorming solutions as you continue to work on the project.

  • Thursday

    Water industry careers

    During a morning site visit, you'll see where the water cycle begins.

    Then you'll combine lunch with the opportunity to explore career pathways and stories with guests.

    In the afternoon you'll begin preparing your group presentation.

  • Friday

    Presentation day

    You'll learn how to present with confidence in a morning session with a communication specialist.

    Together, you and your teammates will then finalise, practice and present your groupwork.

You could take on one of these roles for your work experience

  • Project Engineer

    Leads infrastructure or process upgrade projects.

    Responsible for procuring, planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling key projects.

  • Water Quality Scientist

    Ensures the drinking water supply meets the requirements to ensure public health is protected.

    Provides advice on water quality, water treatment strategies and risk management.

  • Process Engineer

    Brings a broad set of technical and soft skills to projects, including people management.

    Troubleshoots, problem solves and thinks critically to ensure service provision.

  • Communications Officer

    Considers customers, communities and other stakeholders first to ensure we act with their interests in mind.

    Takes all the information and uses multiple communication channels to keep people informed and aware of the facts.

  • Stakeholder Approvals Officer

    Ensures that all relevant government stakeholders are notified about Coliban Water works activities and that any exemptions/permissions are gained.

    Considers the relevant acts and stakeholders.
