Conversation begins about vital plant upgrade for Castlemaine

2 August 2024

We recently held two information drop-in sessions about the proposed upgrades for the Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant for key community groups, stakeholders and people who live near the Langslow Street site.

As well as wanting to share some early information about the upgrades, we also wanted to listen to what these key groups and people were passionate, concerned or curious about.

Environmental flows, water quality in Campbells Creek, noise, odour and energy efficiency were raised in these discussions.

For those who are keen to chat with us about this project, there will be more opportunities in the future. This is only the beginning of our conversations on this shared journey.

Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant Program Director Danny Childs said it was important to listen to the community.

“As always, we are transparent and we’re looking forward to hosting more sessions in due course. Alternatively we invite community members to ring us and ask us questions.”

“We have a strong relationship with a number of stakeholders and we want that to grow, and ensure we maintain their trust.

The plant produces about 1,400 megalitres of treated water each year, with some going to recycled water customers and the majority flowing into Campbells Creek. Proposed upgrades will see treated water at produced at the site continue to help maintain and sustain the environmental values in Campbells Creek.

Once key approvals for the project are received, upgrades will take several years to complete.

These upgrades will increase the plant’s treatment capacity, reduce its carbon footprint, reduce noise and odour emissions, improve environmental benefits for the nearby Campbells Creek and provide more resilient sewer services to the growing Castlemaine community.

The plant currently treats wastewater from 15,500 residents and businesses in Castlemaine and surrounding areas. Growth forecast estimates the Mount Alexander Shire’s population will hit 22,000 by 2028.
